Un aspetto importante quando ci si approccia alla fotografia è la capacità di osservazione. Molto spesso, nella vita quotidiana, tendiamo a guardare velocemente la realtà che ci circonda. Sempre presi da tanti impegni e con la mente sempre piena di pensieri, tendiamo a non prestare molta attenzione a ciò che capita sotto il nostro sguardo.
Una cosa che ripeto sempre a chi mi chiede come migliorare le proprie fotografie, è proprio quella di imparare ad osservare. Imparare a guardarsi attorno veramente sembra una cosa banale ma non lo è. Dovremmo prendere esempio dai bambini, quando li vediamo assorti e con lo sguardo fisso su qualcosa che ha catturato la loro attenzione.
A volte passano minuti interminabili ad osservare un insetto che si è posato sul pavimento, proprio davanti a loro. Noi adulti tendiamo a passare oltre velocemente. E questo atteggiamento non ci aiuta quando vogliamo approcciarci alla fotografia in maniera cosciente.
La cosa più difficile è studiare la quotidianità a cui siamo abituati e che diamo per scontata. In periodo di lockdown molti, costretti in casa, e quindi in una situazione a cui non erano abituati, si sono inventati progetti per ritrarre la loro casa, le loro abitudini e molti progetti fotografici sono nati proprio da questa nuova consapevolezza dei luoghi comuni e mai tanto presi in considerazione.
La stessa cosa a me è successa nel momento in cui ho iniziato ad appassionarmi alla fotografia astratta. Inizialmente non è stato immediato calarmi in questa nuova realtà e iniziare ad approcciarmi ad un genere molto diverso da quello a cui ero abituata. Poi pian piano ho iniziato ad osservare i muri della mia città, scoprendo così tanti nuovi soggetti.
Osservare i graffiti nei minimi dettagli mi ha permesso di scoprire una miriade di nuove interpretazioni di ciò che avevo davanti ai miei occhi. Piccole porzioni di colore assumono diversi significati. Come nella serie “Sintesi politica” di cui vedi un esempio, qui a fianco.
Il bianco, il rosso e il nero. Tre fazioni ben delineate, una l’opposta dell’altra. E poi il dettaglio di quei tre pallini che interrompono il rigore delle linee rette, per me simbolo di una libertà di pensiero non conforme alle altre, ma ugualmente importante.
Ciò che mi affascina di questo tipo di fotografia è ciò che mi ha sempre affascinata davanti ai quadri astratti. Il significato interpretato dall’autore è una sola delle tante interpretazioni che l’osservatore può cogliere. Ognuno può leggervi ciò che la propria sensibilità e la propria conoscenza possono suggerirgli.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING TO OBSERVE IN PHOTOGRAPHY
An important aspect when approaching photography is the ability to observe. Very often, in daily life, we tend to quickly look at the reality that surrounds us. Always busy with many commitments and with our minds always full of thoughts, we tend not to pay much attention to what happens under our gaze.
One thing I always repeat to those who ask me how to improve their photographs, is to learn to observe. Learning to look around really seems like a trivial thing but it's not. We should take children as an example when we see them absorbed and staring at something that has caught their attention.
Sometimes they spend endless minutes observing an insect that has landed on the floor, right in front of them. We adults tend to pass quickly. And this attitude doesn't help us when we want to approach photography in a conscious way.
The hardest thing is to study the everyday life we are used to and take for granted. In a period of lockdown many, forced into their homes, and therefore in a situation they were not used to, invented projects to portray their home, their habits and many photographic projects were born precisely from this new awareness of commonplaces and never much taken into consideration.
The same thing happened to me when I started to get passionate about abstract photography. Initially it was not immediate to immerse myself in this new reality and start approaching a very different genre from what I was used to. Then slowly I began to observe the walls of my city, discovering so many new subjects.
Observing the graffiti in detail allowed me to discover a myriad of new interpretations of what I had before my eyes. Small portions of color take on different meanings. As in the series "Political Summary" of which you see an example, at the beginning of the article.
White, red and black. Three well-defined factions, one the opposite of the other. And then the detail of those three dots that interrupt the rigor of straight lines, for me a symbol of a freedom of thought that does not conform to the others, but equally important.
What fascinates me about this type of photography is what has always fascinated me in front of abstract paintings. The meaning interpreted by the author is only one of the many interpretations that the observer can grasp. Everyone can read what their sensitivity and knowledge can suggest to them.
